Beyond the Surface
EMPATHY INSPIRED | DATA DRIVEN | STUDENT MADE
Augmented Reality Exhibition
What is this project about?
This exhibition is an exploration of the complex and diverse problems faced by community college students, intended to foster empathy and understanding.
The students collaboratively curated the purpose and visual representation of the exhibition. Individual pieces are grounded in a detailed and methodical examination of the everyday lives of the10 students, from which they recorded personal information about 10 different data points. This process was driven by a desire to highlight the similarities and differences between individuals and to create a greater sense of understanding amongst community college students.
The resulting collection of pieces is both visually captivating and deeply thought-provoking, with each work offering a unique perspective on the challenges faced by students.
The artist's key for interpreting the data set information is a vital component of the exhibition, allowing viewers to better appreciate the significance of each piece and to gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing community college students today. 5 data points are common between all the students, the remaining 5 data points represent personal elements unique to the individual.
Through this exhibition, the students invite us to reflect on our own experiences and to empathize with the diversity of people that make up our community.

Note from the Instructor. This collaborative exhibition represents an ambitious project taken on by my Spring 2023 Compositing class where students have complete freedom to design the assignment from start to finish. Students embraced the complexity of the project, electing to create a website as a central host for accessing the exhibition, Beyond the Surface, to reach a wider audience. Through strategic decision-making and close collaboration, the group established clear goals, defined roles, set due dates, developed a grading rubric, and defined the scope of the assignment. The decision to focus on the issues faced by community college students demonstrated the group's sensitivity to the diversity within the community college student body. By leveraging their collective skills and knowledge, the group created a multifaceted exhibition that provides a platform for community college students to share their experiences. This project serves as a compelling project that highlights the potential of collaboration to yield innovative and impactful outcomes in the classroom.
